40 Daly Avenue
Fit for a King
It was 1876 when Joesph and Caroline King with their 5 children arrived in Stratford after having immigrated here from England. In time Joseph and Caroline would have 7 more children and the family would settle into their new Canadian home at 40 Daly Terrace. Their older son Frederick with his wife Ethel purchased the house next door at 48 Daly Avenue. There they raised children Frederick Jr., Harry, and Edward.
The King families would stay on Daly Avenue until 1951. Walter King took ownership of 40 Daly after Joseph passed in 1921. Frederick King Jr. took over 48 Daly from his father Frederick Sr. Over fifty years on Daly Avenue the Kings raised their families and the homes passed from one generation to another.
In most recent times 48 Daly has been demolished while 40 Daly has enjoyed an extensive sympathetic renovation. Daly Avenue sits on high ground that slopes quite rapidly to the street below. As a result, this offers a fabulous view that overlooks the Collegiate Flats and on to some of Stratford’s earliest land mark buildings.
Daly Terrace was in the early 20th Century considered a prestigious street to live on. Would seem the King families chose wisely and would live to enjoy that decision for a long time. Source: Pictures and text Vince Gratton.

The 1931 group photo here has been identified as the King family along with numerous neighbours’ and friends in front of 40 Daly Avenue. It was a King family reunion of celebration for all the descendants of Joseph and Caroline King.
