The Briarhill subdivision was opened in 1970, the name borrowed from a subdivision in London, Ontario.
Biar is defined as a prickly, thorny bush or shrub, now usually a rose bush. Briar is also the common name of the white heath tree, the root of which is used to make smoking pipes.
The Macdonald Brier is the annual bonspiel for the men's curling championship of Canada. The Brier was started in 1924 in Manitoba by the Macdonald Tobacco Co. which then manufactured Brier plug chewing tobacco and later pipe tobacco taken from the briar root. By Stanford Dingman
