Boyd Street is named in honour of Dr. Joseph A. Boyd, dentist
37 Douglas St.
Born in 1896 in Antigonish, N.S., Dr. Joseph A. Boyd was one of Stratford's most public-spirited citizens.
He was a prominent member of the board of education . He offered his services to many of Stratford’s residents and became president of the Ontario Dental Association. His office was on the second floor at 11 Market Place overlooking Market Square. This location had been the offices of an earlier Stratford dentist, Dr. Alfred Ahrens (1851-1929). His daughter, Cora B. Ahrens, (1891-1964) began her piano teaching career in one of the suite of rooms. This dental office was located right above Canada Coach Lines. Dr. Boyd and wife wife Rose lived at 37 Douglas St. Source: Streets of Stratford 2004
Note from Gordon Conroy. Dr Boyd was our family dentist in the 1940s and 1950s. He was a kind and jolly man. I liked him as a young boy, although like others, I never liked going to the dentist. However, Dr. Boyd made the outcome worthwhile for a youngster. I always received a dime pressed into my hand when the visit was over, along with a smile and the words all young boys wanted to hear, "You're a brave, young fellow."
